As a childless married woman, I’m often targeted

As a childless married woman, I’m often targeted with questions about why. I’m always surprised by the responses I receive to my less-than-eager answers to these questions.

“You’ll never feel fulfilled unless you have children.”

“You’ll never understand what love is until you’ve had a child.”

I’ve even seen a public figure go as far as to say that childless women will inevitably become bitter, maladapted sociopaths.

Not only are these claims completely false, they are a contradiction and insult to women and all that we are capable of accomplishing and being.

A woman’s choice to have children is deeply personal, and any woman who chooses not to have children likely has good reason for doing so. Health concerns, past abuse, financial or marital troubles, and infertility are just a few examples.

Secondly, love is a complex emotion, and comes from many different sources. While love between a mother and child is unique and beautiful, it isn’t necessarily more fulfilling or meaningful than love between two partners, or even a person and their pet.

Why? Because we all have different needs. What is stimulating and fulfilling for one person, can be overwhelming and troubling to another. Thankfully, we have the freedom to search our own souls and discover what brings our lives meaning, peace and purpose.

Also, how selfish is it to have a child simply because it will make YOU feel better? Children deserve loving, nurturing homes. The decision to care for a child should never be taken lightly. Fulfillment comes from within us, and having a child is not a sustainable way to create happiness or wholeness in one’s life.

I guess my point is that we need to stop passing judgement on women who say "No," “I can’t,” and women who say “Not right now.” We need to stop telling women they won’t be complete until they have children, because it’s simply not true. We need to stop being so narrow minded about what a healthy, established and complete woman looks like.

We are lovers, workers, teachers and leaders. While motherhood is noble, courageous and beautiful, that doesn’t mean it’s for everyone. Women are so much more than the children we bear.

This is a quote from Joe Vs The Volcano. A good friend of mine always says that everything in life can be related back to this movie, and she’s totally right.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this particular quote lately, and how easy it is to internalize this philosophy and live it. How we can slowly leak the carefree happiness we once had as children.

It reminds me of something my father told my husband shortly before our marriage. He said, “Well, she can be a handful, but I promise you that your life will always be fun.”

Nearly five years later, I’ve often pondered about the truthfulness of that statement. I’ve always been playful. But I think I’ve lost a portion of it on occasion. Particularly because my anxiety can strip me of my ability and capacity to have fun. It’s probably the single most devastating side effect of my disorder.

You see, my soul craves fun. Not the extravagant kind of fun like sky diving or parties. But the every day sort of fun with a beauty that stems from simplicity. Like dancing to the radio, or sliding down the stairs in a sleeping bag...

My kitchen has magical properties, and maybe yours

My kitchen has magical properties, and maybe yours does too. Today was difficult for me. The all-to-familiar feelings of panic and dread overwhelmed my senses. Why? Who knows. There’s nothing I can point to as the causality. All I know is that the chemicals in my brain continue to wage war on my well-being.

By mid-afternoon today, my panic subsided, but was quickly replaced by sadness and exhaustion. Why do I feel this way? Is this ever going to end? It’s been nearly ten years now. All I wanted to do was lay in bed, hiding from the world and it’s problems, in addition to my own.
.

But years of experience told me to do otherwise. So I got up, and entered my kitchen. It was there that I lost myself. Where I lost sight of my anxiety.
.

The crunch of the vegetables quieted the noise in my head. The smell of Cajun seasoning filled the air, and my heart. As I peeled and deveined the shrimp, I felt myself peeling away from my own problems. And finally, as I sat down to enjoy my beautiful bowl of Jambalaya, peace and accomplishment found place in my soul.

What is it about my kitchen that’s so magical? It’s not a particularly large or extravagant kitchen. But today, it healed me. My mom says that good food can heal a broken heart. But I’m convinced making food can do the same.
.

Losing yourself in the taste, touch, smell and sounds of good food can be a healing salve when you’re weary of existing. So the next time you’re feeling down, try heading to the kitchen. It might be just the kind of magic you need.

This is a conversation between me and my dad after I told him I couldn’t sleep because of my anxiety. 💜
My dad is a 55 year old farmer and business man. Even though he’s never experienced anxiety or panic, he doesn’t disregard my experience. He tries to understand. 💜
What if more people were more like him? I can’t imagine the progress that would be made in the mental health community.

So many of us expend vast amounts of energy trying to explain the validity of our symptoms to unsympathetic ears. People like my dad help raise awareness, but so can we. When we talk about mental health and our experience, we raise awareness and increase understanding.

Every bullet on my to-do list became darts of panic and dread, and I wondered how I would accomplish it all while feeling as poorly as I did. I got up anyway and half-heartedly made an attempt to get started, but realized after about an hour that I was just too tired and overwhelmed to make good progress. As I thought about my predicament, I felt a sense of guilt and shame wash over me. I thought about how, for me, so much of my value as a person is mingled with my ability to be productive. But then, as I stood contemplating where my value lies, I decided to let those feelings go.

As I crawled back into my bed with my dog and my favorite movie, I gave myself permission to be unwell, at least for one day. I didn’t choose to stay up all night, my sleep was once again stolen from me by the monster in my head. Much like a child paralyzed with fear from the unseen boogey-man, I too experienced great despair at the hands of my captor. And although others may be unable to see it, the fear experienced by myself and the paralyzed child is much too real.
